Re: daughter wants more low end (need info)
It may, but it mainly depends on what the port timing was changed to when the porting was done. More often than not engine tuners end up sacrificing low end power in order to gain more HP that usually ends up at the top of the RPM range by raising the exhaust port a touch and just plain opening up the ports a bunch. It's the easy way of gaining HP. The good tuners, and there are very few, are capable of avoiding this in most cases, unless high rpm range hp is the goal. I would suggest checking the clutch out. It may be that it is engageing to early and not allowing the engine to reach the rpm range in which it generates the most hp. This could be from wear inside the clutch or the fact that the HP has been pushed so far up the rpm range the stock clutch is restricting it from reaching that rpm upon engagement. Another very important tip, belt wear, the more wear on the belt the narrower it gets, and it don't take much as far as loss of width to cause loss of "whole shot" power. Change the belt first if you have not done so in a while, you'll be amazed at the difference a fresh belt will make.NE14SAND wrote:82 fl 250 new engine, reed set up, 36 mikuni, dg pipe, ported. thats what shes got. it hauls but. but sons stock one has a lot more bottom end she says, i realise hers is set up for top end but im told a smaler carb will give her more low end. is this true? and will she lose speed? need some input PLEASE THANK YOU

Re: low end
I take it the items you mention above are mods that have been done? Has there been a loss of low end power recently, or is this the way it's always been since the porting and such? It just may very well be that when the porting was done, the exhaust port was raised to a point that low rpm hp was lost and the powerband has been pushed way up the rpm range, which is typical, that can't really be undone and I really doubt a smaller carb is going to regain much of that lost low end power either. If this is the case about all you can do it raise the point of engagement of the clutch and I don't think that's possible with the stock clutch on that 250. I am more familiar with the Pilot and the 85 odyssee of which niether can be adjusted, an aftermarket clutch such as the powerbloc has to be installed to do so. The 350 spring on the driven is holding back the shift and that's a benefit, but it's doing nothing to affect the time of engagement. You can call Harold Holiday at HRD Racing in Rialto, Ca, phone 909-875-4150 or HRD Racing.com, to get the answer to that question. He's the clutch expert on oddysses and pilots. Super nice guy with so much knowledge it'll make your head spin and he's always willing to talk to ya.NE14SAND wrote:new belt, stock cultch. spring on driven out of 350. so what do you think would help???

Like i said, I'm making assumptions on the port timing, without putting my gauge and a degree wheel on it, I can't be sure, it's just a guess based on experience. It could still be another problem, a tuning problem, low compression, ignition timing or it may be that someone put a pipe on it with a very short expansion chamber, which would be a high rpm pipe. Without some real research into the details of that particular motor and setup guessing is about all I can do at this point. My advice is too limit the dollars into that 250 and put it towards a 350 oddysee or real big money and go with a pilot soon, something with suspension to absorb the extra speed. Sounds like your kids gonna make that move inevitable anyway
More power daddy, more power.

Replace the stock clutch you then can dial in all the low end you will ever want, you might as well replace the driven clutch while your at it changes are it is worn, excessive wear or a worn bushing will affect up shifting...
Trying to use the stock clutch setting on a modified engine is like doing all the engine mods you performed on a TRX250R then always trying to take off in 2nd or 3rd gear.
