My First Rail

Hello all, did not see a "Noobs post here first thread" so im posting here mods feel free to move.

I just got my first VW rail and am trying to figure out if I should put a spark arrestor/muffler or just a spark arrestor? I dont really care about the noise but I do want a green sticker and I want the best performance.

I am not sure if the back pressure from the muffler will make any difference or not on the VW motor?!

I would also like to know where would I find a balancer/tool for tuning the dual carbs for the least amount of money?

I am going to be replacing the seat belts adding guages, LED bar and I want to find a cool looking spoiler for the back.
I think I will need to replace the clutch petal cause it is bent in a funky way.
If anyone knows where I can get this stuff for a deal (used is ok) just send me a PM.

I wasn't in the market for such a toy it just happened and I could not turn it down for the price.

Welcome to the board Yugo!

First, what are the specifics of your VW engine? Size? Carbs? Exhaust? Distributor? Any thing else you can think of will give us more context.

I vote for the muffler and spark arrestor. I have a Tri-Mil exhaust with a Super Trap. It gives good performance and it's not too loud.

Thanks a lot guys, great info Booga. So I just found a CNC pedal assembly for $200 I think Im going to jump on it it comes with the slave cylinder too.

If you go with CNC pedals you'll have to use a hydraulic slave cylinder for the clutch and maybe the throttle too. Much more complexity. If you get the sliding mounting plate you can adjust the leg reach without moving your seats. Works really well when multiple height drivers share the rail.

I've used the stock pedal assembly since I built my buggy. Zero problems.

I mounted my seats on adjustable rails. Much cheaper, but sometimes my adjustable rails get clogged with sand are not easy to budge. No worries in my case as I'm the only driver.

Yes Booga I know about the slave cylinder. The assembly I am getting is all three together (clutch break gas) CNC Im getting this for $200 including the slave and they look like great condition. The guy kept fluid in them when he took them off his buggy.

I will then change the break lines and the throttle cable.

I want to replace it cause the break cylinder I have now is shot and super stiff and would need a rebuild and might even need to replace the plastic container too. It is chrome now so a new chrome break cylinder is $40 or so plus the container I figured I would just upgrade.

I wanted to find the seat slides as well although the way they are mounted now I would not want to move them.

Next after the clutch stuff I would want to upgrade to disc breaks.

Today I noticed a little bit of play in the front wheel bearings I will be looking for new ones tomorrow.

First on the agenda in this order;
* Clutch, break, gas
* Spark arrestor
* Front wheel bearings
* Front shocks (chrome)
* Ignition switch (its now broken)
* Clean up all the wires
* LED light bar
* 2 small LED lights in front
* New seat covers (black and yellow)
* Tach and some other guages
* Build a cool looking spoiler/wing from sheet metal
* Fun in the sun.

So update I got a CNC assembly and slave for $200 (used great cond.)
Also got a new throttle cable.

No I need new lines and some time to do the work.

Also picked up a 30" led bar and 2 small led lights (squares)

I will keep you updated.

So its been a while, I installed CNC pedals, got a super trap and had a hell of an awesome time in the dessert!!! I just bought a new rail (pics to come tomorrow!)

I am going to be pulling this motor and trans I have now and putting it in my new buggy!.

I wish I knew a good mechanic in my area but I cant find anyone!

Thanks for the book advice, my gf is going to buy it for me.

So I got the old motor and trans from the yellow rail into my new one!!!!

I just finished last night.

The only things left are mounting the oil cooler, the oil filter, batt, and new air filters (seems like the motor that came out had low profile or smaller carbs and mine dont fit.) I think i might be making a custom air intake box that will cover both carbs.

The first picture of the back is the new "old motor" and the second picture is right before I bought it. I will post new better pics when I finish it!

So today I started building a custom air intake cause my webers are way too big for this new frame, so instead of low profile filters I did this.
