sand Viper rim size Help

I bought some 14.50x15 san vipers. I have dome a little research and found out that you can run 8" to 12" wide rims for them. Can someone tell me what would be the difference in running the 8" to the 10" to the 12". I heard that the smaller the better the bead would stay on with out bead locks. SO I was thinking 10" to play the middle. Can someone break it down? and also what does the 14.50 mean? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks.
