DJW's New Tent

Post by djw »

Well, since Jason got one, so we had to follow suit.

Got it for free and yes there's some issues.
1. House batteries are totaly dead, (2 X12V).
2. LR leaveler has springs broken.
3. Motor runs like a champ, with headers too.
4. Donno what's up with the fridge and gennie.
5. Brakes are good, tires are fair.
6. Both AC's work.
7. Worked the awning a bit with some fine abrasive, and a bit of lube.

Thanks Vince,
I have most of the 12V/120V systems online, but the driver’s side rear leveler ram is going to be an issue.
Anyone dealt with the old A&E systems, I searched and the only hit I got was a site that was whacked.

Wow, that looks nicer than you made it sound! I think Jerry Seaver has a similar vintage Southwind if I remember right.

Be careful with the plastic fittings on the awning...one of the ones on Matt's broke and finding a replacement was difficult. I guess they don't make a lot of the parts for the older awnings that fit the curved sided 80's models anymore. They make new awnings that fit...but not parts for the older ones :(

If you want to give it a first road trip I've got that party coming up on the 13th. I can move my RV over to a friends for storage and let you have the shade and hookups in the backyard for the weekend ;) Of course you'd have to be up for going as late as the party goes if you did that since it would be right on your doorstep!

Yup, finding all sorts of bit of business with this.
Don't think it will be ready for the 13th, but if we do come out...
Truck and rail, do some time over at Gorden's or Buttercup.
Hey it's not to far from Yuma. :D

Plus your parents will be in town, I'm assuming.
We would love to see Tim and Kathy again.

I'm having some issues with the LPG, and the gennie.
Looks like I'll be spending some coin on new house batteries this weekend.

My main concern is the new exhaust system.
There's no CAT's (dual exhaust, with headers).
Doing the searches, I believe earlier RV's are exempt.
If not the case I'm in a world of hate.

Slop "O" matic turned me on to the local RV bone yard.

What a great deal... As for the batterys, look at getting 2 6V deep cycle ones as they will power longer than 1 12 v. As for the headers, my old "Exploder", 1976 Dodge 440, had them with no Cat converter. Had duel exhaust and was never a problem getting it smoged. Other than re-tuning the carb, pulling back the timming, changing the thurmostat (sp?) back to 195 deg. It was all good.

Having an older rig is perfect for the dunes. just replace the carpet with "pergo" and a broom.

Thanks Glen, that’s good news about the Cats. =D>
The rig does have dual exhaust, with these big O mufflers.
Sounds healthy, but quiet.

Today I got the LPG system working, turns out the gas monitor has to be engaged in order for it to flow. #-o
So I got the stove working, but still have a few more challenges.

The converter has two 12V busses, one 12V going to lights and bits of business (which work).
But there’s a separate buss that also charges the house batteries. ( 0 volts).
Unfortunately this bus supplies the power to the water pump, furnace, and 12V to the fridge. I have 120 at the fridge, but I’m assuming with out some 12V for the internal circuit it’s not going to fire up.
The house batteries are totally gone, so I’m thinking that the charger has popped offline, and that a fresh set should make all those systems come up. Other than that the charger is blown, but nothing a few discrete devices won’t fix.

In case your wondering, I’m a telecom engineer with a prime discipline in -48 DC power and grounding.
I had a lively chat with a fellow engineer of one of our vendors for batteries.
We could shoe horn about 1K AH into the couch, but at 500Lbs, and resizing every main feed.
Plus as we say, what you take out, you need to put back in.
The 10A charger is not up to task, along with these are mostly made for stationary installation.
The plates probably wouldn't last long on bumpy roads and pot holes.
I’m looking at some spec for others, an interesting puzzle.

Interesting thing I found is this couch has two latching relays to take the couch and starting battery off line. Pretty cool for working on the system, and I like Bill’s set up for shunting the AMP meter.
This couch came with a sack full of documentation, literally the thickness of a telephone book.
I’ve just scratched the surface on what’s equipped.

I have found a site that has great prices, no sales tax and low shipping cost.

http://www.rvpartsoutlet.com/

They have a convetor upgrade that I used to improve the 12V system in my new motorhome that really helped. was easy to install and keeps the batterys ready to go at all times.

http://www.rvpartsoutlet.com/product_in ... ts_id=6007

Adding the "Charge Wizard " will make this work the best. They have it for about $15.00

A ton of information can be found at this RV forum.

Look up batterys and converts for more info...

Woo Hoo, we have a water pump.

Turns out the 2nd buss on the convertor is isolated to the battery.
Since there's no output from the charger, no 12V to pump, furnance and TV amp. But some careful jumpering, I got the pump and TV tested and working.

Still there's the fridge and heaters.
And it turns out there's two furnances in the rig.

We fried one fan in the back bedroom which took out one 12V curcuit.
Doncha love the smell of burnt insolation. :-#
Luckley it only took out the fan not the wiring.

Nice. I always like that style coach...and you can't beat free.

Here's a list of RV salvage yards that I've referred to before.
