Guesstimated weight of this trailer

Post by Intelliduner »

Gang,
What's your best guess as to the weight of my trailer (while empty)? It's an 8x12 enclosed, with fiberglass siding. Just curious what the approximate total and tongue weight would be. My starting guess is 1000 lb gross and 150 lb tongue.

I could stick a bathroom scale under the tongue jack but don't want to bother finding a proper scale to put the whole trailer on.

Rather than guess why not find a scale near you? Only costs a few bucks to get it weighed.

I'd guess your trailer at closer to 2,000 gross empty. My 8x16 enclosed weighed 2,200 from the factory and it was the lightest 16' trailer I could find a builder for. Tongue weight is nearly impossible to guess since it depends on the balance of the trailer over the axle(s).

single axe right? I'm guessing 1241 pounds.

I say we make it a competition...to see who is closest...and no 500 point spreads either...

One number...one guess...

I'd like to know what the frame is made of, but judging from what I can of the tongue, I'm guessing it's dead on 1183 pounds, empty.

Too much trouble taking it out for anything that isn't absolutely necessary. I keep it stored elsewhere and it's more work to haul out than I want to mess with (not to mention that I'd have to unload everything and re-load it again--no thanks  )

Looks like everyone's guessing in the same ballpark, though. I just need to know if I can tow it with a bumper mounted tow-ball (see my thread re. a Nissan Titan). From what I've learned on a Titan forum, and these guesses, it's well within the capacity of the Titan's bumper.

Just because it's within the capacity doesn't mean you won't run into trouble.

I had a Class II bumper hitch on my Ramcharger rated for WELL over the weight of my single axle trailer/rail combo.

But after a few trips to the dunes it bent my bumper and I barely made it home ... and then only with the hitch digging into the ground in some places despite the 4" suspension lift on the truck :(

And yes, I had a proper drop hitch, things were level and the tongue weight was proper as well.

Personally I don't trust bumper hitches for much more than a small harbor freight trailer with a lawnmower or two on them now.

I"m with Jason. It's well within perameters I'm guessing...but not within stressless towing IMO. I'd have a hard time towing just about anything I care about with a bumper hitch, especially when you can have a nice class III hitch installed for a couple hundred.

Thanks, gang, all valid concerns. If I use their truck at all, it will be for one trip to Vegas and back, and the truck will likely never see another trailer again, so buying a hitch receiver is overkill. Although if I could rent (or borrow =D> ) a bolt-on receiver cheaply enough, that would be worth considering.
