Permits

Post by Chips2000 »

We are thinking of going to Coral Pink Thanksgiving, and am wondering about how crowded it can get, and if we need to have special atv permits since we are based in Arizona.

Thanks!

Ok, found out about the permit fees from a post below, but cannot find any info on crowds during Thanksgiving.

Thanks.

Chips, It been years since I've been to Coral Pink and it was in the Summer so I can't offer any advice for Thanksgiving other than it will be chilly, maybe even down right cold.

I recall RichB commenting on a holiday there. Plus he has quite a few posts in this forum. If he doesn't chime in, you might want to shoot him a PM.

Good Luck.

It shouldn't be crowded on Thanksgiving, that's pretty far into the start of the cold season for there. On average, the bulk of Coral Pink riders are folks that normally ride Dumont so by the end of September most folks are done with CP for the winter.

According to the Utah web page http://www.stateparks.utah.gov/ohv/reciprocity.htm AZ and UT do not have a reciprical agreement. :( The campground does sell stickers on site though and if I overheard some conversations correctly when I was up there a couple weeks ago they can also give the safety course for the young folks (for a fee).

p.s. Memorial weekend is the biggest weekend of the year there by far, followed probably by 4 Jul and then Labor day.

If you're thinking Thanksgiving there, think snow!

I was there in late October a few years back and it snowed!

Weather there can do almost anything and without much warning.

Was just there 1 week ago. It was beautiful.

Keep in mind CP is at 6000ft evelvation, so I would think Turkey Day may be awfully cold.

A quick check of average temps show November averages a high of 59, low of 30. December high of 50, low of 23.
Milkvetch.... It's not just for breakfast anymore.

Ok, excellent. I will inform the rest of my group and make a decision. The cold would be doubly hard to take since open campfires are not permitted.

I might try to talk them into going in early October. A lot of us want to visit CP from what we hear it is a beautiful place.

Thanks for the info.

You can have campfires there. If you're talking about staying in the park campground they have fire pits at each campsite. If you're going to camp down at the meadows BLM area then all you need is something to have your fire in.....in other words you can't build a fire on the ground. Anything will work for the meadows that keeps the fire coals off the dirt....cut-off 55 gal barrel, washing machine tub (seen them) etc.

Hope you make it as it's absolutely beautiful.

Edit......I just saw your signature. If that WW is a 30' pull behind I would strongly recommend you guys think about camping down at the meadows. The park campsites are EXTREMELY tight. I walked around the campground a few weeks ago and marked spaces on the CG map as to which ones I'd consider if I ever went back to the CG there and I tell ya, they're aren't many. I'd be happy to give you my take on which slots I'd recommend if you guys are dead set on trying the park CG.

Yes, I was looking at the meadows, not the campground. Your are right, my rig is a 30' WW pull behind, and it is modest compared to a couple of 36' and 38' 5'ers we have (there are 8 rigs in our family), so we have to find places that can acommodate us. We prefer circle camping.

That is good news about open fires, as I read somewhere that there was NO open fires allowed even at the Meadows. If we have to go when it is cold, a fire will make it much more enjoyable. I am sure we can come up with something to contain the fire as you suggested.

Thanks for the heads up!
