Coral Pink Sand Dunes....

Alright guys and gals - you've got my interest up on this place. I'm sure I can Mapquest the location but how about a heads-up as to a recommended campsite close to the good stuff. Our accomodatioins will be a 26' Weekend Warrior tow along which I'm told will sustain life (if conservative) for about a week before replenishments are needed.

There is only 1 campground... you can't miss it.

As far as being close to the "good" stuff, you will be.

You will need to make reservations. There is a limited number of spaces.

My take on Coral Pink: Nice relaxing place to camp; Beautiful colored dunes; Tallest dune 100ft(?); Can dune the whole place in less than an hour.

Where will you be traveling from? Southern Calif? If so, there is a backroad you make want to take that might not be on Mapquest. It will save much time/hassle instead of going through Zion & Kanab.

When I go to/went to the Coral Pinks, I exited I-15 just on the north side St. George, dropped down to Hurricane and went back to Arizona for a bit, down through Fredonia and turned left up to Kanab and the dunes.

If you go through Zion you have to drive through a toll-tunnel and it's tight.

The dunes are at 6,000 elevation so you will most likely have to rejet.

The dunes are extremely soft sand, you'll bury easy unless you on flat ground or pointed downhill.

There is a state campground, need reservations as Rick said ^^^ and it's all paved and has restrooms/showers, dump station. There is also free camping outside this campground called the Meadows.

If you can, get a space in the Campground, and not the over flow Meadows...

Water at most sites, there is a dump [central location], and showers. Tables and trees. If I ever go back, it would be to enjoy the solitude and quietness of the area. 10pm quiet time strictly enforced. If you have a 4X4 quad enjoy the back country trail rides. Coral Pink sits in a valley with steep trails going up from it. Although, you can dune all the "Main Dunes" in a matter of minutes [as Rick says above], the away trails are very different, and fun.
If I go again, I'd bring a kiddy pool and a 100+ foot hose to fill it, then you'd have your own 'private pool'...

Also as Brian said above, the tunnel through Zion will be closed in one direction when you go through, when we went, it was directional. The thing is, I would go up [to CP] like Brian did, then go back down through Zion, which has some of the most interesting sights/rock formations.
Zion is worth driving through. I have even taken the "Cane Road" which is dirt for about 7 miles. Not recommended for a MH but a air bagged 4X4's ride would be ok...

BTW It was more fun riding my 250r [with sea level jets] than my rail...
4x4 ATV would be very fun...

The sand at Coral Pink is very, very, very soft. Had a lot of fun when I went there.

YOU GUYS MAKE THIS CORAL PINK PLACE SOUND MIGHTY INTERESTING. I JUST WATCHED A DOC ON TV LAST NIGHT ABOUT TRAINS IN THE AMERICAN WEST AND IT SHOWED SOME AWESOME PLACES FOR SIGHTSEEING. THE ANTICIPATION OF RETURNING TO THE "DUNE LIFE" IS ALMOST MORE THAN I CAN STAND. MY BIGGEST FEAR IS THAT SOMETHING WEIRD WILL HAPPEN BETWEEN NOW AND RETIREMENT TIME (LIKE CROAKING...) WHICH WILL HAVE A RATHER NEGATIVE IMPACT ON MY PLANS. I'VE EVEN SLOWED DOWN A BIT ON MY AGGRESSIVE DRIVING TENDACY (TRAVEL 38 MILES DAILY EACH WAY TO WORK) TO HELP ENSURE MY ABILITY TO MAKE THE TRIP NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT I SAVE A LITTLE AT THE PUMP.... I GUESS ON THE TIRE ISSUE I'LL LEAVE THE OEMS IN PLACE BUT TAKE ALONG A SET OF MOUNTED DUNESTARS FOR THE SOFT STUFF. Sanddigger, with the right tire preasure, you should be able to go anywhere with the stock tires. However, I do agree with your assesment to get the paddles in "just in case".

I always fear the day that my father retires, because I feel that when it happens, he will be more prone to passing since he does not have an everyday mission... I think that getting into duning is a great step for you, giving you a mission and something to look forward to tomorrow. It seems that when retires dont have a tomorrow to look forward to that they are more prone to "croaking" as you put it. It will be great to have you back in the community and I hope to share stories around the fire with you in the future.
