The MPR Team is planning a trip to Coral Pink Dunes

1. MPR Team is me and my family.
2. We're planning a jaunt up Coral Pink from L.Elsinore via Las Vegas, then North Rim Grand Canyon, then finally to Coral Pink. We have day trip plans in the works from CP to Bryce Canyon, St. George and one of the gorges up there.
3. We looking at doing this in the middle of October [13 ~ 21].

I've looked into the Utah rules and found that double riding is permitted, but kids under 8 can't ride at all.

Not sure what else to say, what questions to ask.
I've read a lot in this Coral Pink Dunes Forum, I just want to talk about it.

So, chime in if you can... let me know what I should but don't.

Ahh! Steve, you're throwing me for a loop man. Mike, my wife and I rode our Rs there. Stanley, Jeff and Amy rode their Shees there. There are no freakin' rules against 2strokes there.

Your time of year for your trip, beware of weather there. We went the 3rd week of October and almost got snowed in!!

It's 6000 feet up^^^^^^^^......you will need to rejet your R, go smaller one size and plug chop, may have to go 2.

The sand is very, very soft...scrubs a lot of power. A hill that you think you can rip in 4th.....you struggle up in 3rd!

In between rides, I liked to just lay on a table in the shade and look at the scenery! What a beautiful place.

The state campground is quiet at night.....you can hear the silence!

Mike,

You are in for a great trip. We usually do this once a year and always look forward to it. If you camp in the meadows, check out the trails across the street (to the west). You can actually ride these all the way down to the Virgin River. Great views and good trail riding conditions. Bring your GPS so you don't get lost. There are also some great trails on the east side of the dunes (top of the hill) as well.

We could easily spend an entire week there riding. If you do stay in the meadows, bring your own firepit, no open fires permitted on the ground. Have fun!

We just went to Bryce and Zion and stoped by the Coral Pinks for part of an afternoon.

The campground looks nice. If you can get into it, I would. There are more rules in the campground and in the dune area, so be forewarned.

As WR said, the time of the year is a little late. By the middle of October, the best dunes in the world are at a temperature that you don't have to ride only at night.

OCTOBER IS GLAMIS TIME!!! (I know, I know, you go all year round!!)

I KNOW! That's what I was saying. Problem is our summer schedule is so jammed that mid-oct was the first available time. With Coral Pink in the mix here, I don't know if I should be so bummed that our first Glamis trip won't be till November.

Maybe I would be, if I wasn't still picking glamis sand out of my ears from last weekend.

Do you realize the north rim is a 6-8 hours drive on a DIRT road from the highway?? You might want to consider coming up through Flagstaff AZ, staying at Camper Village on the south rim, then you'll have an awesome drive through the Painted Desert and Lake Powel on your way to Coral Pink.

I've stayed at Trailer Village twice, it's the only full hook up camp ground INSIDE the park that I'm aware of it. It's walking distance, or free tram ride, to everything on the south side. Plus the drive is beautiful and on a genuine paved highway. Believe me, you don't want to do the North Rim with moho and trailers!

Fill your propane tanks! We left our furnace on all night on "high" setting!

When there's snow in the dunes, the sand compacts a little and we were riding with knobbies, but, should you spin them too much and get through the wet sand, you're in the soft stuff and stuck!

Plus, riding in the snow is COLD! ! ! ! ! !

No, I didn't. That's why you see a well versed Glamis go-er asking newbie questions here about Grand Canyon and CP. This is the first time I've ever been up that way.
Thanks for the tip on Camper Village... in fact, we were also taking about finding something close to the tram. I'll look into it further, discuss with others on this trip, etc.

No problem on the recommendation Mike. Coming back from Dallas 3 months ago, we got off the 40 in Flagstaff and took the exact route you have planned out. We stayed in Trailer Village (for our 2nd time) for a couple days. There is a tram (free) stop at the entrance to the camping area, which makes getting around very easy.

We then headed to Zion through Page, Kanab, and Coral Pink, a very scenic ride. You could either stop for lunch in Page or Kanab, depending on when you leave camp. Also, I HIGHLY recommend Zion National Park for at least 2 days. There is a private camp ground there called Zion Canyon Campground (see link below) that I can recommend. Good place for the kids. We got a spot right along the Virgin River, where the kids played all day (we stayed there for 4 or 5 days). Again, they have a free tram to take you to the park or town for dinner. I'm almost tempted to invite myself along because it's a great little trip you have planned out.

We've confirmed reservations at Trailer Village at the Grand Canyon and in CPS Dunes, we're planning to stay in the Meadows [dry camp].
We're looking at possible stop at Jacob Lake for a day on our way from GC to CPS Dunes. This, in addition to Zion, Bryce & Flaming Gorge, will be decided upon once weâ€™re there as we anticipate that snow will certainly be a factor for us. Jacob Lake has an elevation over 7000 ft.

Some people might hear of snow and run from it, but I wouldn't mind some inclement weather right about now [i.e. Mid August in L.Elsinore, reaching 105ish every day, AC runs non-stop to keep the house at a "cool" 83 degrees

]. We HATE the summers here!

Wednesday night it was still 112* at 7:30pm. Pretty nice today. Its only 111* right now.

Mike, if you're passing through Baker on your return trip why not drop by Dumont for a day? I haven't been there, but would really like to some day.

You're going to love Coral Pink. I want to go back there, we went in 1985, the place is beautiful. Be sure to check out The South Fork Indian Canyon Petroglyphs.

I was just reading about those yesterday at this site. If you scroll to the bottom of the page, there are pictures of the Pertroglyphs! In addition it looks like there is some cool 4WD trails up near that area too. My big truck would like that!

We're really looking forward to this one!

This picture looks like the razor my wife rode over and crashed.

She was following me and we were shooting up and around that lip. I looked back and she was gone, so I backtracked and found her laying with the 3-wheeler (ATC 200X) upside down next to her. After I saw she was OK I started laughing and couldn't stop.

I don't know how it happened, but she had a tire track right across the side of her helmet. Boy 'o boy, did she get made at me for laughing.

I hope she doesn't see this. She still gets pissed when I mention it.

Mike, as previously mentioned mid-Oct is starting to get late in the season for there. It's do-able but you could get a huge variety in weather. It's high desert so it gets chilly at night that time of year.

Bring jets, better yet rejet before you get there. In my experience small cc bikes/quads will run fine there with sea level jetting if run in the sand as it's thick and those bikes have to trudge hard through it. Big bore 2-strokes I've had have been borderline wheras they should've probably rejetted but were rideable without rejetting. Every modern (bigger i.e. 400cc+) 4-stroke I've owned or been around up there has run like a pig until the needle was leaned out a notch along with a main jet size (or 2). With the exception of big weekends I prefer to free/dry camp in the lakebed (meadows). You can totally forget about the kids riding if you stay down in the State Park CG, you WILL get a ticket. The lakebed hasn't had a heavy LEO effort for about 3 years now (unless they've changed this summer). You will see State Pk Rangers down there once/2x a day but it's not really their turf. Usually they're checking to see if anyone needs anything i..e they'll bring you firewood down from the store and stuff.

Grand Canyon. I'm VERY partial to the North Rim. I rode around the forest just outside the park proper once or twice a year and we've stayed at the campground there on the rim. SUPER NICE, no crowds.

Bryce Canyon. One of our favorite places to forest ride ATVs/bikes and one of our favorite National Parks. Plenty of places around there to camp (even dry camp) and the weather there is usually pretty mild (in between altitude compared to some of the places we Utah ride/camp).

We're going to be heading up to either CP or Bryce area the end of Sept....can't wait. We haven't been to either place yet this summer which is very unusual for us.

We're expecting some pretty cold weather on this trip so we'll have a closet full of jackets in the Trailers. As for the variety of weather, the shorts, jeans and t-shirts will be in the dresser.

I have jets for my 250R, but I don't have any for our Predator 500. I don't suppose by any lucky chance the Predator can use 250R jets?

I'll take a run down to the Motorcycle Shop [Dang it!

] to see what I can find.

We're not planning on my son riding at all, in fact we're leaving his quad at home. After looking at the rules, we'll just be riding doubles [leagally] with him. That'll be a trip for him, I'm sure! The hard part is going to be explaining two weeks later why he can't do it at Glamis].

We'd love to do the North Rim instead, but I've heard about some crazy long dirt roads to get down there. Not to mention, the higher elevation will be more likely to see snow in Mid to Late October. Maybe on another, spring or summer trip up there.

I never really thought of Bryce Canyon as a place to ride... I'll have to look into it more. Thanks for the tip!

Is there some sort of an all-access National Park pass that we can / should purchase? Can you point me in the right direction for this?

Please be sure to post of your your End of Sept trip when you return. That'll be just as we're packing up to leave and the whole family will be interested to hear of your travels.

I went Flinstone Village in 78-ish out of a 3 week cross country trip I think I remember that place the most. I would think tyler would dig it.

Back when I went there was no RV park. it was kinda dingy but the pix here look better than when I was there. Maybe you can stop by there on the way to the South Rim?

Well let me ask you this. Who's going to be riding the Predator? If it's a novice than it might not matter. If it's going to be someone that hauls azz normally out in the dunes then they'll benefit from correct jetting.

You mean to the N. Rim visitor's center/campground? If so, there's a paved road all the way to the edge of the canyon. The spot we camped at in the official CG we could easily throw a rock from the trailer down into the canyon (not that we did)

This is a big secret so don't tell anyone!!!! The #1 rated ATV trail in the country is within a 10 min drive of the front gate (Casto Canyon Trail). Also, you can ride quads into the town and right to the official park entrance sign.

Mike, depends on how many parks you plan to visit within a years' time i.e. run the #s and see where you come out. Look into a "National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass" (formally known as National Parks Pass). They're $80 now. http://www.nps.gov/fees_passes.htm

Almost forgot. During the few times a year I say at "commercial" campgrounds I heavily rely on the website http://rvparkreviews.com So far I haven't been disappointed in any park we've stayed at based on feedback folks have submitted on the possible selections.

My dad and my wife will be riding it. Not so much my dad, but my wife would probably 'appreciate' correct jetting.

Yeah, I was just looking a a map with this morning's coffee. Seems [paved] Hwy 67 heads South from 89A [Jacob Lake] down to North Rim. It does say though that 67 'CLOSED IN WINTER'. So, we might not be able to hit North Rim. We were talking about playing it by ear once we get to Canyon Village and learning more about the weather up there.

Wow, we cetainly will be hitting Bryce Canyon Nat Park, and I'm going to see if we can shoe-horn a way to bring the quads [as this means we'd need to bring the trailers too cause it's a lot of work to empty the truck beds, load quads just for a day trip then return to camp and do it all in reverse]. We're talking about maybe camping up in BC so that we can do this all liesurely. Man, starting to learn that 10/11 days aint enough for all this stuff.

Well, 3 more days until departure.
The trailer's loaded up, I just need to finish up my weekly 'sentence' at work.

This is our planned route, 1,174 Miles:

F:10/12, drive from L.Elsinore to L.Havasu City, connect with my in-laws, spend the night.
Sa:10/13, drive from L.Havasu City to Grand Canyon, stay at Trailer Village for two nights.
M:10/15, drive from Grand Canyon to either Jacob Lake, or to Coral Pink via Kanab.
If we go to Jacob Lake, we will likely only stay for a day or so and from there go up to Coral Pink.
We plan to base-camp at Coral Pink in the BLM Meadows and day trip to the local National Parks [Bryce Canyon, Zion, etc].
Sa:10/20, drive from Coral Pink to Las Vegas, stay there for one night.
Su:10/21, drive home from Vegas.

In total, we have three rigs, 4 or 5 quads, 5 adults, my son, two dogs and a partridge in a pear tree. $\:D/$

All of us are really looking forward to this trip!

If I find a wireless connection along the way, I'll post some pics.

Well Woody, we usually camp past the last finger, across from the valley road that leads to Comp. Cell service doesn't work so well, but Sanduners will be there, and his trailer has a big R&R Duners text in red letters.

This is probably the coolest formation I've ever seen in a dune field!

We camped in the BLM Dry Lake Bed:

BLM fenced off a lot of 'Wilderness Area' with these fences. Our camp can be seen in this pic.
