What should I expect, coming from California?

Just a few questions. Our family is planning a trip to Coral Pink in August. From where I live (Central Calif.) I can make Las Vegas in 6 hours in one day and then Coral Pink in 3 the next. I have a 38' Toy Box and 4 bikes. Is there a place to camp at the dunes? Can I ride from camp? Any special Off highway stickers I need? Are 2-strokes ok? What about noise limits? Any tree-huggers to worry about? What can I expect as far as weather? And lastly, whats up with the kids riding test?

Any other tips or ideas you can think about would be much appreciated. Thanks

Coral Pink will be closer to 4 hours from Vegas, through Zion but do not take the short cut (dirt road) south when you leave CP, your rig will rattle apart!

The BLM non improved camp area north of the main CP entrance is very nice, but quiet time is enforced on these dunes. Bring an above ground fire pit-NO on ground fires allowed. And no fire works.

Don't worry about any restrictions (noise-etc) although these dunes are on Environmentalist 'Hit Lists' for now we can dune.

Stay off the greenery and on the trails,You'll be fine. Explore the south dune trails they are kinda fun...

I think you can drive into the camp ground and use the showers with a small fee.
Or you could get a reservation-pull through sites, shade, water. bring your sprinkler/small inflateable pool and cool off in style?

Have fun, weather should be in mid 80's and don't forget CP is above 6000' elevation...

ok having just gotten back from coral pink over memorial day i will update you on the new rules.
no campfires even in containers in the blm area of the meadows. the campground is another story. the kids have to be 8 yrs old to ride their own bike.
distance from vegas is about 3 to 3.5 hrs.do not go through zion national park or you will be very sorry. tunnels and switchbacks make pulling a big rig very bd. when you get to hurricane turn right and go through colorado city and then you can take the cane bed road. it does get a little bouncy but i just hauled my 40' toyhauler through there and it wasn't bad. otherwise you pass by cane beds rd and go to ferdonia and then left to kanab and on to c.p.
i would call the kanab district blm before going and also the coral pink ranger station to find out the fire status.
last i would expect the temp would/will be much closer to 100 degrees + in august. i have been going there for 25 years and it's never in the 80's in august! it was high 80's over memorial day.
other than that have fun it's a beautiful place

Driving an extra hour on a paved road is well worth it wait for your next dune trip you'll be hearing rattles you've never heard before from your rig...

Really no above ground Wood Bar-B-Q's? Was your fire container approved for that purpose? Or was it an old washing machine?

Fredonia is the way to Go, but the drive through Zion is so beautiful.
If you go the southern rout through Fredonia, then take the Zion route home you get a change of pace...
Just for laffs I just yelled into the other room and told the wife that some one was recommending the dirt road south of CP as their preferred rout, she said and I am quoting: "...well if you want a good vibro job..."
Either way CP is a different kind of fun...
How do they check ID of kids under 8?

Basically youâ€™re right about the weather, but it was 88 at Glamis last weekend when it was 95 at CP so it depends on where Mr. Weatherman puts that â€˜High Pressureâ€™ on that dang weather mapâ€¦

steve, normally i would not take the cane bed road but friends went up a couple of days earlier and called me and told me that they had just graded it. anyway it was worth a try. didn't have any problem but i normally take the fifth wheel to ferdonia and kanab.
as far as fire, it didn't matter what kind of container there are no open fires of any kind including charcoal barbq's. this was a new rule from blm and i think they did it just to keep the law enforcement problems down. it sucked not having a campfire but it got quiet early and no rowdies with loud music etc. trade off for everything i guess.
i have always enjoyed cp but don't ride the dunes much any more. we stay up on the trails in the high dunes and do a little fast running and jumping.

I am with Terry on the road issue. I pull a 30foot weekend warrior, and have been down the road when it is rough and just after a grading. When rough, i keep my speed down and take it easy, and when smooth I can cruise at 45 most of the way. Regardless, it is faster and many miles shorter than going through Kanab. However the section after the ranches can be soft, and can require a certain amount of speed to get through with a big rig.

Been on road 3 times, once with lowered dually not pullin anything, we did like 50.
Other 2 times with MH pullin 30' trailer.
"Vibro to the MAX" 1 out of 3 times, do you feel lucky?

Plus we love the senery of ZION, but time before last time I had to talk pretty fast to get through the tunnel, they didn't want to allow my 69' rig through!?!
Last time, 3 other rigs went through the tunnel and Zion, we took the south route/cane road or what ever it's called.
We made it to Mesquite Nv 5-6 minutes ahead of the others, BIG deal...
I still got rattles from that drive I can't figure out!???

I am heading down on the 20th of July and will be leaving friday the 26th. Should be a nice trip.

I have reservations at the campground. Looking forward to it. This is the first time to Coral Pink.

Fourth of July 6 years ago. True story.
We were playing cards with our teenage son and his friend at our outdoor table.
We were laughinh and having a great time, our campsite was on the northern most edge, with no one within 75' of us.
The camp host walks over and asks us to hold it down. No one in our camp had been drinking. I asked camp host "What?"
"hold the noise down"
I then ask:
"you mean to tell me that you are telling us that we can not laugh?"
Now we had no TV or generator sound, it was around 10:20pm, but when he answered my question:
"Yes please hold down your laffing..."
I laughed him out of our camp, I could not control my self, I was rolling on the ground. With my wife and two teens also hysterically laughing...It was pretty funny, laughter is infectious...

I was there last Septmeber near the end of the month. We just had my 63 chev and found that if you get past 35-40 mph the road becomes must smoother. Its like riding the top of the whoops. However past there the road turns to much for the speed but theres some sand to help smooth things out a bit. I dont think its enough to get stuck in. The road becomes paved at the border where the windmill is. It was 95 on the Sunday we were there and 85 the following Thursday.
It took 2 hours from the timeshare resort in mesquite. We did visit Zion that week and drove thought the tunnel, then turned around at the ranger station. I definitly would not go through Zion to get there.

One thing about the sand there is that it more orange in color than pink but thats because its full of red oxide like the cliffs on the edge. Also if you are riding Quads make sure your tire pressure is 3 psi or less. I had 5 in my wifes quad and she got stuck in the first turn. 10-12 psi for dirt bikes. The stuff is amazing soft. So much for a shinny rim. Also you might use leaner jets for the 6000' elv.
MY CR wasn't spot on but good enough for a couple of day rides.

I went there on and Little Sahara over Memorial week end, from so. cal. I found CP was a long drive, the wather was goog, the sand was loose. I think for about the same amount of driving time you could go to Little Sahara and the dunes were more like Glames.

Well it looks like the kid age restriction shuts my family down from enjoying that park. Sounds like a lawsuit for some enterprising lawyer--age descrimination.

What about the Utah requirement for a safety course? I looked everywhere and there is no mention of out-of-state residents, whether they are exempted or not, or how they could even have a chance at getting certified since the classes are not given outside the state.

I can not believe any riding restrictions are inforced at CP or LIL Sahara.

You don't even seem to be required to have helmets/goggles/gloves/safty equipment no ware; at LS the last time we were there. The dunes at Lil Sahara are very close to Glamis type of dunes. The camp grounds at LS some have running water so bring lot's of hose and maybe a "Kiddy" pool to cool off in.
If you are really crazy park at the bottom of Sand Mountain-Lil Sahara on a big weekend (Memorial/Labor Days) it gets insane crazy. Like camping at the bottom of Olds at Glamis...

Small to medium dunes all around camp grounds.

Bigger dunes at "Back side" of Sand Mountain.

Stare at Sand Mountain from the base, take a mental picture. When you get back to Glamis, stare at Olds-you'll be let down by the smallness of Olds.

Thinking of Lil Sahara for Memorial Day if Glamis is over 95 degrees.

It was beautiful scenery going on that 14 mile dirt road

It started out fine but got bad quick with NO WAY to turn around so we just went for it!!! Wife in the camper holding all the cabinets shut,,,

dirt coming in every hole and crack...
When we came up on the sign that said; "Entering Utah" That road was the smoothest asphalt road I've ever been on...

Although is was a major short cut,,, we went home on asphalt all the way...

We took the short cut (Cane Bed Rd) this weekend for our 1st trip to CP. It wasn't bad at all. If anyone knows the condtion of the Dumont road this was better than that normally is. I am VERY cautious and do not beat on my trailer. With that said, we traveled about 30MPH for 3/4 of the road and the tail end I eased up to around 15-20ish. The sign says is 11 miles from Hurricane to CP and my trip odometer logged it @ around 9 miles or so of dirt road (that's not that much longer than driving in to Dumont). I wouldn't hesitate going that way again.

Other 1st time impressions: Beautiful area; cool trails; high altitiude (jet down); bigger acreage than what people had described to me; SOFT SAND; HEAVY RANGER/SHERIFF policing. The latter started to bug us as by the Sunday morning about every single shift that came on duty had set foot in our camp giving us the 3rd degree lecture about their rules and regulations. We may camp inside the campground itself next time as I'd have a hard time believing they harass the paying customers vice the "freeloaders" camped down in the meadows. Oh yeah, they are hard-over on not letting the kids operate under the age of 8.
