Christmas Valley pictures!

Hey, if you are curious what christmas valley is like check out some pics on http://www.shiftingdunes.com look in pictures section and go the the bottom of the page. Thanks for putting them up VOR.

They look pretty flat and mild until you get to the last picture. It looks like a resonably good sized hill. Are there any more this big? Any bowls? Thanks for any additional feedback!!!

The pics pretty much tell the tale. The one at the bottom was only about 50' but the pic makes it look bigger. The tallest peaks might hit 75'-100'. The dunes are not the best for buggies but good for quads and bikes. Endless jump possablities if you are into that. There are some good, smaller, bowls with real steep sides. Needless to say, steep=soft so hitting bowls out there is more a matter of not bogging. The good thing is that you can have the place to yourself and though it is not ridden often, the dunes are not fluffy-soft. The consistency of the sand is just like glamis. It is the best dunes, other than glamis, I have ridden (though I am yet to try Dumont). I just read a cool fact about the place too, turns out the sand there is ash from Mt. Mazma which was a volcano that blew it's top forming the hole that is now Creater lake (deepest lake in the USA).

Yes I have been to the dunes on the coast. They are awsome but I just liked Christmas valley better. Being used to so cal deserts, Chirstmas valley is more my kind of duning and camping.

The tent camping is good but bring your own firewood because there is not much to scavage. It gets really dry during the spring/summer months too.

I made a trip up to Xmas Valley last October and liked it a lot. I posted some info and some pics of it at http://www.duneguide.com forums. They aren't big dunes but each dune has it's own personality and the place what a buttload of fun. There were no big bowls but a few "half bowls" that provided quite a bit of entertainment. Anyways, check the pics and info out I posted at Duneguide.

Worth noting is that the Forest Service lady there is freekin' AWESOME. Totally unlike the A-Holes you find over on the Oregon Dunes on the coast. Just my opinion.

I'm going to Winchester Bay this summer, travelling from Idaho. May have to make a day stop and check these dunes out. They are only about 50 miles from 395.

From where in Idaho will you be travelling? the Christmas Valley Dunes should be almost in a direct line, as you say, going through Burns and Bend; apparently, you have some quality time off?

Yes! I would, but only in the Moho!. We are now in a truck and 5'er and that much driving would take a lot of the fun out of it.

Well, with today's fuel prices, the incentive for the motorhome is somewhat lacking....for most....gosh, peeking around and opening one's mouth....can open the door to some good conversation, right?

@ $3.00 a gallon, that trip cost me about $1,125 just in fuel. Ouch!, thanks for bringing that up!

Sorry! I hear you and unfortunately, it's not getting any better; talking with another friend who went to St. Anthony in '06, he said the fuel cost was just too much to plan the trip again any time soon.....from where I am, S A is a little further than Glamis was for us in CA.....from here, Dumont's 13 hours....Glamis, further....with diesel now over $3.50 gal, and calculating 8mpg, it isn't cheap...
