What's the 2nd best eye protection from sand?

Post by Booga-dune-poon »

I know the 1st best way to avoid sand in the eyes would be to avoid it all together, but that doesn't help me when I do go there.

My Scott MX style goggles work ok in the dirt and mud, but when I get roosted with sand it comes in through the foam on the sides. They fit properly, as in there is no gap between my face and the googles. I do not trust sunglasses at all period. Last trip out I got more in my eyes than I can tolerate.

Oakley "Sand" Frames. I've been blasted full in the face wearing them, and no sand got in.

Scott Desert goggles are similar to the Oakleys; they have a higher density foam on the edges that doesn't let the sand through. They are a bit warmer to wear though since less air gets through too; that said, I love them.

I tried them out over this past weekend at Gordons Well and the Oakey "sand" frames worked purfect.
Imagine driving headlong into a sand storm and getting roosted (several times) by the grandsons 250cc two-stroke with a paddle tire and yet I experienced zero sand inside the goggles. He was in front of me and his eyes got full of sand just from the sand storm while wearing the average dirt bike goggles.
Time to buy him and the wife new googles.

We really like the Oakleys too, but I made the mistake of storing them with the foam (face) side down in the cabinet and now they don't seal as well :(

Doh! [-X

The Oakley Sand Goggles are great. If you can afford them, the Iridium lenses are also nice to have. Unfortunately they're about $25, and they scratch very easily. You gotta be real careful with them.

My brother and son-in-law both swear by these face mask type goggles. They claim to have zero problems with sand getting in.
An early birthday gift from bro. The price is right, so I'll try them and report back after the next dune trip.

I'm very interested in how those work, we've been thinking about trying them since the last SSSS.

Trip Report:

Went out over the Super Bowl weekend. The sand was wet below the surface from recent rains. It actually rained a little early Sunday morning. When it hit you it felt heavy. Running in a line of RZR's, quads, dirt bikes and buggies over 15 long I never once felt like I needed more protection.

Oakley Sand Frames can handle this! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zDt8WjTmw8

SavePhace works just as well. My sister riding shotgun wearing the mask says it worked great.

The Oakley L-Frame MX Sand Goggles is enough for me. Face masks make me feel constricted.
