Ridge Crossing 101 - Dune Safety

Post by Crowdog »

I finally got around to editing a video we took last Spring at Sand Mountain. I almost took out a kid sitting below the ridgeline on the opposite side of me. Very close call. Just a few seconds long, but you'll see what I mean.

Ridge Crossing 101 - Video Demonstration

A few things to remember:

- Do not cross directly over a ridge. Approach at an angle so that you can see over the other side.

- Whenever possible try to transition a ridge on the drivers side of the car. Your vision over the top of the lip is much better on your side of the car.

It would help if the knucklehead on his bike sitting just below the ridge HAD A FLAG!! ](*,)

This happened to me twice last season... near misses because of quads with no flags.

The kids wasn't even on a bike. He was dropped off at the top to sand board down. He was sitting on his butt just a few feet below the ridgeline.

I get chills just thinking of what could happen. Good save! (Did you go back and tell the guy you almost squashed him?)

STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!

He only needed to be a couple more feet up ON THE RIDGE to be able to be seen from a LONG ways off.

We had a bike run out of gas a couple trips ago. The guy said he was going to stay with his motorcycle half way up a bowl while we went back for gas. We said, "No, you need to go to the top of the dune and sit there." He complained about there being so much sun up there. We marked his location with the GPS and left.

When we came back, he was indeed sitting on that ridge and we could see him over a mile away. No GPS needed.
