What’s a “LaserBeam†between Friends?
Thought I would take the Fire Arms in Camp into a new thread.
On Glamis ThanksGiving weekend, about 8pm, standing in back of my Toybox, the three of us got a pleasant surprise! One red laser beam sighted on the back of Toybox ramp, held tight in a 12 in spread? Which only means that it was mounted on a scoped rifle, thereby holding a very close minute of angle!
Now…. I’ve been around firearms for the better part of 40 yrs, and I be **** figuring how that person was able to bench his weapon, aim between us without the beam without touching anyone?
Was he showing off his skills at weaponry, or warning us that we better off camping elsewhere?
We knew where the beam came from just by looking at the beam lighting up the dust and smoke, just very difficult to pinpoint the exact campsite from which it originated?
Now here’s my question…..why in hell would anybody bring a red beam laser scoped sighted rifle to Glamis?

Well, my guess is that it was a kid or two playing with a regular laser pointer? Not sure why you are so sure it was a rifle scope since you didn't see what device was making it?? A regular laser pointer could have been held steady by any number of common, easy, and readily available options like laying it down on a table.

Morning Woody,WoodIsGood wrote:I'm going to hope that the suspected rifle was an airsoft gun, and not a real weapon. And the person who was pointing into your camp was a kid who wasn't thinking about how his actions would feel on the receiving end.
My Grandson's Airsoft rifle lasted one day before he shot the household cat in the eye! Surgical Dad made sure said rifle made it into the recycle barrel!
Real weapons are designed to kill...period!
Play weapons are designed to train one to kill.
My girls were trained to handle weapons at a early age with the older one being very expert with every type of pistol.
In fact, she make one of the baseball "Jocks" cry in front of his friends, when she owned him at Slap Hot Hands! Made me cringe just watching!
Contrary to what ex-wife objected to....my girls were train to protect themselves with firearm skills and lightning fast reactions.
Getting back to laser sighted firearms in camp.
Would you agree that any type of high tech firearm shouldn't be allowed to "Kids?".... in what would be considered a family oriented campground?
If not "Kids".... would you or the group allow an adult(s) to bench and aim a Laser/Scope Rifle/Pistol at another camper/group?
Remember: The beam had to be turned on after some type of dot/nite scope marked the middle space between the two men and myself.
RL,UD movement was very tight.....MOA spread was the size of basketball?
Again, value your opinion,
RAD
PS: Did a InterNet search for firearm accessories and came up with the following items........(Manufacture removed) Night Vision Rifle Scope 3x 90mm Green on Green Reticle with Integral Weaver-Style Mount Matte
$500 plus taxes
(Manufacture removed) 5mw Red/Green Laser Kit with Picatinny-Style Mount Matte
Kit includes laser, pressure switch and mount. Laser is internally adjustable so that once it's mounted to the gun, the mount does not need to be removed or loosened to move the laser point. Water resistant. Runs on a single 3 volt lithium battery (included).
$215 plus taxes
Just about any type of firearm that can adapt a Weaver/Picatinny rail on its barrel or frame both night scope and laser can be mounted and sighted for 100 plus yards.
Post PS: Minus the real type of firearm, kind of pricey for a high tech kids toy, wouldn't you think?

Yeah, I got some of those things. They are pretty cool. I used them in combat, as the US Government didnt have the appropriate funds to purchase them for all of us. However, I have been around just about every fire arm there is. I have shot just about every fire arm there is. AW-50 SAPR .50 Cal. Sniper rifles, Mk-19 Automatic Grenade Launchers, MP-5 and MP-10 sub machine guns, etc.....
I know that when I go camping, the only time I have pulled out any of these toys is to play with my dog. I pull the laser off the weapon, point it at the ground, and let my dog chase it. It really is hilarious.
Now, I still work for the Marine Corps, at a simulation center. We use lasers to simulate amunition from bombs and the sort. The laser pointers that I use every day cost about $25 from office depot. I can hold it seady to about 100 yards, on a man size target. My night vision is very good, and I can decern the difference between two men at 200 yards with no NVG's in Glamis with at least a half moon (clouds do play into effect though).
I would say that you may be over exagerating a bit. I would be the first one to come to your defense on this, as I do think that only those that are trained properly in the use of such weapons should ever handle, use, or own them. They, as you said, are not toys.
But I do think that what you saw was a laser pointer of some sort, not a laser sight. To hold it that steady, it could be something as simple as someone putting it on a table pointed in your direction, leaving it on, and letting coincidence figure out the rest. But, if this happens again, and you do feel threatened, call the Sheriff to come and investigate. I dont know anyone that would spend that much money on sights and accessories and put them on daddies .22 long rifle. If they do have a weapon with all those accessories, they probobly have an assult weapon that is illegal in the state of California. And even if they didnt, pointing a weapon at another person in a threating manner is considered a felony.
I dont know why more people dont think to call the police when stuff like this happens. That is what they are there for.
If they dont show up in a timely manner, which I would doubt if there are reports of possible firearms being pointed at your camp, then get in your truck, drive down to the Ranger Station, and talk to someone in person. Im sure that if you really felt there was a threat on your life, you would have taken more action....

Sorry to say, I didn't serve (Vietnam) in the Arm Forces. Was to busy getting shot and stab here at home.
I've never had the pleasure of handling "Go-Large" weapons unless it was civilian type para-military arms of various sorts. You know the type so I will not list them.
Gee....sorry you and others had to order from ebay to protect our Country?
As for "Exaggerating" our experience at Glamis....how about a "Scouts Honor"?
Wooki, I'm going to leave out the Kids in this response and going to those who have the knowledge and training or those practicing in backcountry....and say a big "Yes" it's a felony to aim or point a weapon or laser device at any land or air vehicle or person(s).
But, seeing that there's the local "Border" problem south of Glamis, in the past weeks, can't feeling antsy of late!
Hence, the reason for the "SphincterFactorOfTen" moment?
Trying to keep this thread in the DSSC index so I wouldn't think there's Black Helicopters over head?

Absolutely not. Nor would I allow any kids or adults in camp to point a laser pointer into another camp.RAD4EVER wrote:Getting back to laser sighted firearms in camp.

A simple laser sight sold for airsoft guns can be had for about $15. No need for the big dollar sights you were quoting.
Not to discount your feeling of being threatened, but I don't make the same assumption you do of the laser source being a weapon being trained into your camp in an intentionally threatening manner. Unless, of course, if someone in your camp had done something earlier to really tick the neighbors off. Then, while I would condemn the action, it wouldn't shock me, and I wouldn't disagree with your assumption of the source.

Yeah, I hear you on the border problem. This is why I am always carrying in Glamis.
I can understand you feeling threatened. I guess what my real point was, is if you do feel that sphincter factor, go get someone that is paid, trained and equiped to handle the situation. IE, a police or law enforcment official.
Oh, and dont worry about me having to buy all my own stuff. I wanted it anyways, and to tell you the truth, none of it was "needed" to accomplish this mission. But it was handy....
GB, can you tell us what the penalty is for someone that is caught with an assult rifle in California?

BTW, that laser pointer incident with the airliner prompted new laws. There are specific law against pointing a laser pointer at any aircraft. If I get bored I'll look it up.

Just bought my Wife a '08 Rhino four seater for her. Full rollcage, foam back seats (GrandKids), Raven four points and nowhere to ride.
She's been in and out of hospitals for 4 months of late. Brought her home, droved up to garage, hit the remote door opener and gave her the first look of her RedRhino!

She may have been crying because:
It was Red, and not yellow…
She saw a red ant dead in drive way, and it reminded her of Rhino…
Red made her think of blood and she always cries at site of blood…
She was thinking about her favorite soap star that just died in a red car…
She was happy?
She was sad?
She wanted red seats to match, and she couldn’t understand why you bought the black ones…
Red brings back happy memories of younger days when her former boyfriend had a red car…
Red brings back sad memories…
Red reminded her of your big heart…
Red always makes her cry…
She really wanted the pink [green/black/white/blue/orange/ one…
The garage door made a sound only she could hear, and it hurt her ears so bad it made her cry…
And on & On…
Don’t ask “Why?†you might not like the answer.
