Thanks Guy for including Sand Lake forum! Here's hoping I'm not the only one who rides there that has a computer!!

I do!! I live just a ways west of Salem so Sandlake is only about an hour away.

Met some guys this year who came all the way up from San Jose to do the big Bronco run that they have every year. If you see a Hugger Orange '53 Willys Jeep that sounds pretty mean, thats probly my brother and I'm usually with him. Come up and ask for Shane-0!! We usually have a beer or 2 laying around...

Guy(and the rest of you who have never been there), just to let you know, Sand Lake is the smallest of Oregons dune riding areas, but probly one of the busiest due to its being the closest to Portland and Salem.

What kinda acreage are we talking about? Oh and pics pics pics, I like pics. You can upload them to the gallery accessible via a link at the top of the bbs here. I can set you up to do it if you have any, that way you don't have to host them somewhere.

Hello Shane-O. I'll definitely be looking for the Willy's. I'll be riding my Bomber and chasing my son on his Polaris Sportsman 90. Guy, I will post pics as soon as I can get to Sand Lake again. I don't have a digital camera yet, but will be getting one before long. Work has kept me away from the sand for the last month, but it won't last much longer. We're hoping to get over there in November.

I have been going to Sand Lake since before the road was bad, mid 70's.
Honda 90 three wheelers and jeeps. Some people might remember my
Blue 1942
Ford GPW from the early 80's. Many many beers ago. Sand Lake consists of aproxamately 900 acres with 4,000 plus people on most summer weekends. It gets a little tight sometimes, with it being only 1 1/2
hours from home I still continue to go. It is not Mother G but then nothing else is.

Be sure to check out the one way trail at the north end of Sand lake, Head down Derrick road and go all the way to the northeast corner. Its a trail through the trees with lots of switchbacks and very few whoops. there is a simalar trail near the front parking lot but not nearly as fun. I try not to go there on weekends because the shear amount of people makes riding fairly risky. winter and weekdys are a blast though.

I thought one way went the other way, ending at the northeast corner.

That the way I was told to ride it the ONE time I was going the wrong way. Then a year or two later I rode it with some friends and we went south to north also.

I will definitely check out the trail next time I'm there. The weather looks like it's taking a turn for the worse, but when it lets up, I will get out there. And Shane-O, the bomber isn't part boat, but with enough speed, maybe I'll make it across....? Where does the trail come out on the South end? Does it go North-South, or South-North? Before last month, it had been 18 years since I had been to Sand Lake. It's better than I remember it.

Not sure exactly where it starts(ends?) on the south end.. All I know is we ended up on it somewhere and rode it out all the way to the end. I think we got on somewhere between the first and second bowl, but I couldnt swear to it.

Sorry guys I wasn't trying to send you the wrong way I just thought that was the easiest way to find it

. I think it begins just as you head north from the back bowl, if you drop down into the trees to the west I think you can pick it up there. Who knows though, things change down there quite a bit, it may come out at the beach soon

Yes, I ride at Sand Lake all the time. I love it. I was there yesterday. The lip on the 1st and 2nd bowl are really growing!

It is good to hear that the lip is returning to the bowels. they have been pretty flat for a long time. I am planning on being down there

I have plans to make a day trip Sat. 28th, gonna try and talk a couple buddies into it also. I would get there about 8 or 9 and I will park somewhere out by the trees in a red Toyota pick up with a 86 4trax in the back. Hope to see ya there

Shane-O, how's it going up there in Oregon? Sorry we didn't have more time to hang, but we were so busy trying to setup camp and get registered for the Bronco get together. Our last night I pulled the trailer out onto the sand and had a good time riding at night and partying into the wee hours.

The one way trail is so much fun, we must have rode it a dozen time. We would start right at the southern tree line right before you go onto the beach. Then ride it all the way to the fence at the north end and ride the fence line east until you hit the other tree line where there is camp sites and then ride those trails. But on the east side there are some steep drops that will turn and then you have to shoot straight back up. My quadzilla was so wide that I had to squeeze by two trees as I was turning left and then just give it all it had to shoot up this wall of sand. I took me couple of tries and flying over the bars, because my left rear tire would clip the tree and stop me in my tracks. Looking back it was funny. There was no way to turn around or go back, so I had to pull my quad backwards and get a running start again. Yaaahooooooo.

I'm living in Vegas now so I don't know if I will be able to make it up this year for the Bronco get together. But defintely next year.

We have a whole group that rides at Sand Lake as well as Winchester Bay and Coos Bay. Most of us live in the puget sound region of Washington. Sand Lake is a fun place to ride. Beautiful coastal scenery. It does however seem to attract the low life of the sport. It pisses me off to see the number of people who camp in the dunes and then leave all their trash when they head out. It makes me wonder if these people sit around there living room drinking beers and just toss them over their shoulder when they are done. Losers!!!!!!!!!!!
