Ocotillo to Superstition

A group of us are going to be camping at Ocotillo Wells. A few of us want to go to the Off Road races at Superstition on Halloween Weekend. Some buggies some dirt bikes CR's ... is this possible to off road to the Superstition Race from Ocotillo Wells considering that there will be 2 strokes going or is the distance too far?

Yes. It can be done. I have always followed out group but we would go out Spilt Mountian Road heading away from the airport. We take a road off to the left leads to a road that follows some powerlines and then have to take a trail off of that road. Its a full day trip there and back. I will e-mail and see if I can better details.

To get to Superstition Mountain: there are several ways.

1. You head up San Felipe Wash and look for power poles, there is a dirt road that runs next to them, follow it, it will lead you to the main road to SM. ( Be careful San Felipe Wash can have some â€œquick sand like places this time of year and where it meets the road from the highway it can be Severally! washed out.)

2. You can go to â€œAir Plane Grave Yardâ€ and follow several dirt roads in direction of SM. They all seem to end up at either the â€œTrain Trestleâ€ or the dirt road to SM. From the Trestle there is a road that takes you straight to SM. (Again be careful with this being Halloween weekend most likely a lot of two way traffic on this dirt road.)

3. You can take Split Mountain Road towards â€œFish Creekâ€, thatâ€™s towards the Split Mountain Mine and when you come to the R/R tracks turn left. Follow the dirt road next to the tracks, it will take you to the Train Trestle, and from there straight to SM. It is the fastest and easiest way to SM but ORVâ€™s must stay on shoulder of Split Mountain road until you get to where you turn left down the R/R tracks.

That is a fun trip. Had alternator give out on me heading out to SM, coming back it was a long dark ride which ended up at the end of a tow strap that brought me right to the Iron Door

Which didn't do a thing for the alternator problem....but helped me some.

Funny how those tow straps know just the right place to tow you to!
