FIRST TIME OUT

hello all
looking for some info for my first trip out.
is it easy to find the main camp site?
any areas designated for kids (7 year old)?
if not any easy tame areas for him to ride a crf50?

overall looking for just a nice calm place for my son to enjoy himself maybe a few small jumps(he has rode a perris raceway and loved it)
as for me i will be riding a very tame klx250s (duel purpose bike) so im not looking for anything to wild either

There are many turn-offs along 78 where you can camp - try to arrive in day light so you can pick one that you can navigate to. Most roads are firm enough to support a sizable rig.

Scout the area on your OHV - not at night. Go to the Ranger station and pick up a map. Relocate camp if necessary and if you have time. Your first trip is to explore the area and find out where you want to camp next time.

Even though its a big place, you can cover a lot of it in one day. Take a GPS so you can find your way back to places that you like and your camp.

Exploring is 1/2 the fun.

I have been there a few times with my Brother (he lives in Cali). The wide variety of riding is incredible

We would definatley go more, but we are in AZ and I can't bring myself to drive an hour past the dunes to ride in the desert I live in a desert, if I'm driving that far I am going to the sand

There is a childrens riding area right near the Ranger station, it is fenced in so the little ones will be safe. Make sure you pick-up a few maps when visiting the ranger station, it will make your weekend much more enjoyable. When do you plan on going out?

I'm probably late, but anyways, I like Pole Line Road. I like to stay near Alkalai Wash (it's about a 1-1/2 miles in off of 78). There are several large flat areas to camp at and the area is not overly cramped with people. There's good riding there for all ages and all types of ohv's. Plus, Pole Line (called that be cause of the power poles) provide a good refrence if you get lots, i.e. see the poles and go for them. From Ploe Line you can take a great ride down Oil Well Wash to Hwy 86, make a ride to the Salton Sea down Tule Wash, or hit all the main attractions such as Artesian Well, Gas Dome, Shell Reef, and you are only a five minute ride to the Blu Inn.

The area between the Ranger Station and Cahuilla Road does get busy and you need to be aware of the knuckleheads, but you have to be aware of knuckleheads anywhere you go Keep in mind that the more people are concentrated inot an area at Ocotillo Wells the more dusty it will be.

Get a map at the Ranger Station, My Desert Rose, or the Blu Inn. They are free and a great asset to have.
